The Origin of Culper Consulting

The Origin of Culper

In 1778, as the American Revolution hung in the balance, General George Washington needed intelligence from inside British-controlled New York. A quiet farmer from Setauket, New York, named Abraham Woodhull answered the call. Operating under the alias "Samuel Culper," Woodhull built and led a clandestine network of patriots that would become known as the Culper Spy Ring.

The Culper Ring relied on trust, discretion, and disciplined tradecraft. Members communicated through coded messages, invisible ink, dead drops, and assumed identities to gather critical intelligence while living under the constant threat of discovery and execution. Their reporting exposed British operations, uncovered plots against American forces, and provided Washington with information that helped shape strategic decisions throughout the war.

Unlike soldiers who fought on the battlefield, the Culper Ring fought in the shadows. Their success was not measured by recognition, but by results. They demonstrated that accurate information, trusted relationships, and sound judgment can influence the outcome of events long before a crisis reaches public view.

Culper Consulting was founded on those same principles. While our work is conducted openly and professionally, we believe that informed decision-making, objective analysis, and trusted counsel remain as valuable today as they were during the nation's founding.

Our mission is to help leaders navigate risk, uncertainty, and complex challenges through insight, integrity, and preparation.

Trusted Then. Trusted Now.
